The Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg, now covers virtually the entire European continent, with its 47 member countries. Founded on 5 May 1949 by 10 countries, the Council of Europe seeks to develop common and democratic principles throughout Europe. European Heritage Days are promoted annually in September in 50 countries from the Baltic to the Balkans, from Iceland to the Iberian Peninsula, highlighting the diversity and intercultural links of Europe’s heritage throughout the year.
The challenge
The Council of Europe needed a Heritage Days portal that would allow content to be uploaded by key cultural event creators and viewed by members of the public.
The portal would allow national coordinators to add relevant content for events participating in the scheme and create interactive map data to aid local searches.
Tourists would need to be able to use the resource to search for events of interest by date and geographic location and gather all the information required to visit the event.
The solution
Geeks designed and delivered an interactive website allowing participants to add exciting content for cultural events using state-of-the-art map integration technologies.
International tourists can find events of interest such as festivals, famous places and exciting happenings, or search in a locality by date to find a wide variety of splendid cultural examples to cater for every taste.
The application streamlines content production for the cultural heritage organisations involved - all they need to do is upload their material to their own website and the software "scrapes" the information and uploads it to the portal, removing the need for duplicated data entry.
The Council of Europe now has a system that achieves its goal of cross-frontier co-operation between its 47 member countries and has a one-stop portal for cultural events across Europe, for the benefit of people all over the continent.
The software system designed by Geeks has reduced the administrative load of the European Heritage Days programme.
For tourists, families, students of culture and people looking for leisure activities it allows for the easy searching of enjoyable heritage events across many countries, which was not previously easily available.
